I was asked by Ben Bogart and Winnie Cheung of Tanguero Duo to write a short piece for them to perform on their Tiny Footprint concert tour, which combines Argentine tango with a message of the urgency to act on climate change. El Chanta means ‘the pretender,’ an ambiguous title to be sure, but one with many associations. The piece I wrote is in a tango style, but it is not authentically tango. It combines elements of popular and classical traditions, coming as it were from someone pretending to write tango. Throughout our lives, we pretend in different ways. We pretend to be something we’re not; we pretend to not to care about something we care about deeply; we even pretend to care for something but do nothing to save it. El Chanta challenges the pretender in all of us to be authentic for a change, to put our money where our mouth is.
